6th grade scientists spent the class extracting DNA from strawberries. First, they smushed the strawberries up to break up the cells. Then, they used an extraction buffer of salt and soap. The salt broke the proteins apart and the soap took the fat out of the cell wall and membrane. The mixture was filtered out and ice cold ethanol was added. When that happened, the only thing remaining, strands of DNA, clumped together. Students were able to see DNA which carries all instructions for the function of life.

I want to be in her class! So interesting! Thank you, Ms. Leuvano!
