The Bearcubs fell to Coronado 28-14 Sept. 23. Coronado dominated the first half, with a socre of 28-0 at halftime. The team rallied and came back strong in the second half, with Jose Rodriguez able to run for two touchdowns. But the effort was not strong enough. Final score: 28-14.

Coach Batie said, “I thought we were ready for the game. I felt like we played better but we shot ourselves in the foot by turning the ball over. The team’s strength was that we played better and we scored two touch downs–but we wanted three. The team needs to work on blocking. The most challenging thing is getting the team to understand to run.”

Kameron Yarbrough said, “I was ready for the game because I’m always prepared. I think we played good because we were the first team to score on Coronado. Our teams strength was our defense because we have a lot of stops. Our team still needs to work on is running faster and blocking. The most challenging thing for me this season was not winning as much as I expected to.”

Juan Gonzalez said, “I was ready for the game because we have practicing really hard. The game was a little challenging, but at least we got points on the board and we were the first team to score on Coronado. The teams strength was the quarterback, Jose Rodriguez scored a few touch downs which is pretty good. The most challenging thing is the blocking and not winning the games.”

Coach Funches agreed with Coach Batie, ‘Yes, we were ready for the game. I was proud of the team for being the first to score on the Coronado team AND we didn’t give up–we came back strong in the second quarter. We need to work on getting the same energy and strength from the second quarter into the first quarter of the game. The speed and size of some of our opponents is challenging.”

Juan Sosa was also ready because “I knew all the hard work I put into practices came out on the field. The game went well–everyone showed their best, no one quit on us–we persevered the whole game. Our strength was our defense: they showed up, they hit hard, they didn’t mess around; our line did a good job and our quarterbacks did great. Wide receivers did awesome, too. We need to work on hitting, looking for backers. The most challenging thing this season has been learning how to hit properly–to not get injured, to not get a concussion.”
